The government will launch an international standard investigation into the killing of Abu Sayeed, who was shot to death during the quota reform protest in Rangpur on 16 July, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat said today (1 August).

With the new investigation the police investigation findings won’t matter, he said while speaking at a press conference at his Secretariat office.

He said, “Police didn’t have permission to shoot at the protesters. They can’t do it, but in some cases they have broken the law to tackle the situation. We’ll investigate these matters and bring them to justice.”

During the briefing, the state minister urged the students not to be persuaded by any third party, saying, “You’re going to the streets based on your feelings. Make sure you don’t fall for any incitement by any third party. A vested quarter is trying to create anarchy in the country. Who will take responsibility if further unrest engulfs the nation?

“We don’t have any complaints against the students. They can’t create such mayhem. Our prime minister has already expressed grief over the deaths of the protesters and agreed to accept their demands. These deaths wouldn’t have happened if they had been a little more patient,” Arafat added.
