Teachers at Khulna University staged a silent procession and human chain today (1 August), demanding a fair investigation into the shooting of students protesting quota reforms.
At the human chain, Professor Anirban Mustafa of the Architecture department lauded the current generation, stating, “This generation has shown the path to liberation from the grip of slavery. In this context, my students are my mentors. I haven’t come here to demand justice because there can be no justice when the state resorts to gunfire.”
The demonstrating teachers covered their faces and heads with red cloth as a symbolic gesture.
They also expressed solidarity with students’ nine-point demands.

The teachers said they are appalled and deeply saddened by the horrific violence inflicted upon the young generation.
They also mentioned that such brutality is unprecedented since independence of the nation.
Mentioning that the Liberation War was waged against discrimination, they said today’s student movement echoes that fight.
They demanded swift and impartial justice for the ongoing harassment and murders of students.
On Wednesday, police charged batons and lobbed tear shells to disperse the students during their “March for Justice” programme in Royel intersection in Khulna.
At least 60 students were reportedly injured in the police action yesterday.
11 including, 9 students, sent to jail
A Khulna court today sent 11 people including nine students to jail in two cases filed over obstructing police from performing duties, hindering public safety and carrying out sabotage activities.
Police produced the arrestees before the court today in the cases filed in Sonadanga and Khulna Sadar Police Station.
They were arrested during their “March to Justice” programme yesterday.
