RU teachers get another student released from police custody
After getting four students released from police custody yesterday morning, several teachers from Rajshahi University (RU) secured the release of another detained student last night (1 August).
The student, Ashiqur Rahman, is a third-year student in the Arabic Department of the university.
According to police and teachers, Ashiqur Rahman was detained by police on Thursday morning around 10:30am while attempting to enter the university’s main gate to attend the “Remembering Our Heroes” programme, part of the anti-discrimination student movement.
The police detained him and took him to the Motihar police station.
After learning about his detention, two assistant proctors of the university visited the police station in the evening. Later, Professor Iftikharul Alam Masud from the Arabic Department and Professor Md Farid Uddin Khan from the Economics Department also went to the station. They were accompanied by the university’s Proctor Professor Asabul Haque.
Professor Iftikharul Alam Masud said that they were informed of the student’s detention later in the evening. He visited the police station twice, once in the evening and again around 8pm.
“The police found nothing incriminating on him and released him after questioning, placing him in our custody,” said Professor Masud.
Proctor Professor Asabul Haque said, “After the student was detained, we sent two assistant proctors to the police station. Later, I, along with two other teachers, went there. The police have released the student, but his mobile phone will be returned later.”
Motihar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Md Mobarak Parvez confirmed, “After verification, the student was released into the custody of the teachers.”
