A murder case has been filed against former BNP lawmaker Alamgir Mohammad Mahfuzullah Farid, naming him as the prime accused, for the killing of Shafiul Alam Shafi, the office secretary of the BNP Maheshkhali Upazila unit.

Shafi’s father, Kamal Pasha, filed the case with Maheshkhali Police Station today (18 August), the station’s Officer-in-Charge Sukanta Chakraborty told The Business Standard.

“Shafi was attacked by opponents in the Baniar Dokan area of the upazila at around 11pm on 5 August. He succumbed to his injuries on 13 August at Chattogram Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment,” he added.

According to the case statement, the case has been filled against 25 individuals, with former MP Farid named as the prime accused, along with 7-8 unidentified persons.

Local sources claimed that the murder is linked to ongoing political rivalries within the BNP in Maheshkhali, specifically between two factions led by Farid and former state minister for communications Salahuddin Ahmed.
