Barishal residents struggle as heavy rain floods major Roads

Continuous heavy rainfall, caused by a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, has left the city of Barishal submerged, with most major roads flooded.

The rain has been relentless for the past three days.

Nazmul Hossain, a resident of Barishal’s Bot-tola area, described the situation stating, “Whenever the water level in the Kirtankhola river rises, the Bot-tola area becomes impassable. Now, with three days of rain, we’re facing severe difficulties.”

Kabir Hossain, a three-wheeler driver, expressed his concerns about the damage caused by the floodwaters.

“The water damages the parts of my vehicle. I’m constantly worried about the vehicle tipping over on the flooded roads. The rain and flooding have reduced the number of passengers, and I’m not earning enough,” he added.

Ahsan Uddin Romel, the public relations officer of Barishal City Corporation, assured that development work is ongoing.

“Several wards are undergoing simultaneous drain and road construction. Once the work is completed, the suffering of residents in those areas will be reduced,” he added.

According to Barishal meteorological office observer Md Humayun Kabir, 73 millimeters of rain was recorded between 6am and 12pm today (19 August), with 87 millimeters recorded in the last 24 hours and the heavy rain could continue for another couple of days.

The low-pressure system has prompted authorities to issue alert signals No 1 for the river port and No 3 for the seaport in Barishal.
