Govt cancels Saiful Majid’s re-appointment as Grameen Bank chairman

The government has cancelled the remaining term of re-appointment of Grameen Bank Chairman AKM Saiful Majid.
According to a notification signed by Financial Institutions Department Deputy Secretary Afsana Bilkis today (20 August), his tenure was revoked effective immediately “in public interest”.
In March 2020, the then Awami League-government appointed Saiful Majid as the chairman of Grameen Bank. In April this year, the government re-appointed him as the chairman for another two years.
Chief advisor to the current interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank. In 2006, Dr Yunus and Grameen Bank jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize.
In a separate notification today, Palli Sanchay Bank’s chairman Akram-al-Hossein’s remaining term of re-appointment has been cancelled and Mohammad Mohiuddin has been asked to serve as acting chairman until a new chairman is appointed.
