Incessant rain causes waterlogging in Ctg; heavy rain forecast for 48 hours

Incessant rain caused waterlogging in Chattogram today (20 August) bringing immense suffering to the port city dwellers. 

Meanwhile, the meteorological office has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in Chattogram division for the next 48 hours from 10am today and warned of a possibility of landslides.

Patenga Meteorological Office Forecast Officer Md Ismail Bhuiyan told The Business Standard that 119 mm rainfall was recorded in 24 hours from 6pm yesterday. Also, 106 mm rainfall was recorded in 12 hours from 6am to 6pm today.

The seaports have been asked to show local cautionary signal number-3, he added.

Commander Latiful Haque Kazmi, chief conservancy officer of Chattogram City Corporation said, “The drains of the city have been cleaned. City corporation teams are working in the field. Whenever we get information on waterlogging, a team reaches the spot to take necessary measures for water drainage by removing dirt or waste.”

Deputy Commissioner Abul Bashar Mohammad Fakruzzaman said the administration since Friday started asking people through loudspeakers to go to safer places to avoid any kind of untoward situation due to landslides.

Meanwhile, several flights at Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport were delayed due to adverse weather conditions, according to the airport’s Public Relations Officer Ibrahim Khalil.

Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union, said due to heavy rains and rough seas, the goods clearance operation has been stopped in the outer anchorage of Chattogram port since this morning.
