A court today (21 August) placed Captain (retired) AB Tajul Islam, former state minister for liberation war affairs, on a nine-day remand in a murder case.

Judge Sadekur Rahman passed the order after police produced Tajul at Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate Court this afternoon, said Kamruzzaman Mamun, lawyer of the plaintiff.

Police arrested Tajul yesterday from the capital’s Gulshan area in a case filed over the killing of Chhatra Dal leader Nayan in Cumilla in November 2022.

According to the case documents, on 19 November 2022, when a clash erupted between BNP activists and police during distribution of leaflets for a public meeting in Cumilla, police fired rubber bullets, hurled sound grenades and tear shells, injuring seven BNP and Chhatra Dal members.

Among the injured, Union Chhatra Dal Vice President Nayan was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The following day, former SI Afjal Hossain Khan of Bancharampur Police Station filed a case, naming 17 BNP activists and leaders, accusing them of obstructing and attacking police officers. Tajul has been shown arrested in this case, said Kamruzzaman.
