Some parts of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway has gone under knee-deep water, disrupting vehicular movement and causing traffic gridlock today (22 August).
Some parts of Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Cumilla’s Chauddagram upazila have gone under knee-deep water due to excessive water flow from India’s Gumti River and incessant rainfall over the last few days.
Due to floodwater on the highway, vehicular movement has slowed down, causing traffic gridlock over an 8-10km stretch.
As a result, people’s suffering has reached their limits and transportation of goods is being hampered to a great extent.
Although water levels started to rise on yesterday (21 August) night, vehicular movement was disrupted today (22 August) morning, with the highway from Nabogram to Chauddagram Bazar area completely submerged in floodwater.
Many goods-laden vehicles were seen stuck on the highway due to engine failure, while some vehicles were found trying to move in the wrong direction.
According to locals, the water level rose sharply in the early morning.
“Police and fire service members are failing to improve the situation. The highway will be closed down if the situation persists,” said the locals.
Officer In-Charge of Mia Bazar highway police outpost SM Lokman Hossain echoed the locals.
“Police are trying their best, but the water level is so high that we’re failing to control the flood situation,” Lokman said.
