Ex-secretary Shah Kamal sent to jail in foreign currency case

A Dhaka court today sent Shah Kamal, former senior secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, to jail in a case lodged under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1947.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Torikul Islam passed the order as police produced the accused before the court after end of his five-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till the end of probe.

Earlier on 18 August, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahammed placed Shah Kamal on five-day remand.

Police raided Shah Kamal’s residence in Mohammadpur Babar Road area on 16 August and seized Tk3.11 crore worth of local and foreign currencies. Detective branch (DB) of police arrested him from capital’s Mohakhali area the next day and showed him arrested in the case.
