A new platform named “Ganatantrik Odhikar Committee” has been formed with Prof emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury as the convener to advocate for democratic rights and freedom of expression of people.
The committee brought together more than 100 individuals from a multitude of professions, encompassing teachers, students, artistes, journalists, lawyers and physicians.
The committee was announced from a meeting at the Teachers and Student Centre (TSC) cafeteria of Dhaka University on Thursday.
Joint conveners of the committee are – Prof Harun-Or-Rashid, Abdullah Kafi Ratan, Prof Tanzimuddin Khan, Samina Lutfa Nitra, Seema Datta, Maha Mirza and Kallol Mustafa.
In a statement sent to the media on Friday, the platform saidit will work on all kinds of democratic demands, including abolishing repressive and anti-people laws, ensuring the independence of the judiciary, and protecting the rights of labourers and farmers.
It will also work to ensure democratic campuses free from occupation.
Fascism resurfaces following each significant mass uprising, rendering the sacrifices made in terms of human lives ultimately futile, said the committee, adding that the recent mass uprising in Bangladesh cannot be allowed to fail.
“That is why the committee has been formed as a united platform to ensure participation of all the forces in the democratic movement,” it added.
As members of the committee, the platform named Prof Anu Muhammad, Prof Salimullah Khan, Prof Akmal Hossain, Prof Mamun Al Rashid, Prof Mohammad Azam, Moshahida Sultana Ritu, Snigdha Rezwana, journalist Abu Sayeed Khan, Ashraf Kaiser, lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua, writer-artist Mostofa Jaman and artist Arup Rahee, among others.
