Flood situation in Lakshmipur has worsened due to persistent rainfall and a rise in the water level of rivers, leaving hundreds of thousands of people marooned.
People living in the district are rushing to different shelter centres and safer places.
Water levels in surrounding rivers of the district increased due to onrush of water from Noakhali district and persistent rainfall since Saturday evening, deteriorating the overall flood situation in Chandraganj, Hajipara, Charshahi, Dighli, Uttar Jaipur, Bangakhan, Mandari, Dattapara, Tewariganj, Shakchar and Charruhita unions under Sadar upazila of the district.
Deputy Commissioner Suraiya Jahan said about 25,000 people have taken shelter in the various centres while many people are going to shelter cenres and other safer places.
The DC said Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has already provided Tk10 lakh, 500 tonnes of rice, Tk5 lakh for baby food and Tk5 lakh for food.
“I have equally distributed the assistance and cash among five upazila nirbahi officers of the district,” he added.
