Hasina sued for 5 more murders, one disappearance

The ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been sued in five more murder cases in Dhaka, Narsingdi and Bogura and one disappearance case in Pirojpur yesterday.

Several top Awami League leaders like Obaidul Quader, Anisul Huq, Tajul Islam, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Mohammad A Arafat, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Shajahan Khan, and Hasan Mahmud have also been accused in the cases, along with AL and BCL activists, and law enforcement officials.

In Dhaka, a total of three cases were filed against Hasina over the killing of MIST student Shaikh Ashabul Yeamin, auto-rickshaw driver Babu Mollah, and Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) product seller Md Eusuf Sanowar on 18, 19, and 20 July respectively, during the recent Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Shaikh Ashabul Yeamin’s case was filed by the victim’s uncle Abdullah-Al Kabir with Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Saiful Islam’s court after which it ordered Savar Thana police to register an FIR.

The case statement said Yeamin was shot from an armoured car while he was attending a peaceful protest rally on 18 July. He was rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead.

The case of auto-rickshaw driver Babu Mollah was filed by Masud Rana, brother in-law of the victim, with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court after which it asked Hatirjheel Police Station to lodge an FIR.

According to the case documents, Babu Mollah and Masud Rana went for Jumma prayers on 19 July and when they were returning home after the prayers, police opened fire on them, killing Babu Mollah on the spot.

Md Eusuf Sanowar’s case was filed by the victim’s brother-in-law Mamunur Rashid with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain and the court ordered the OC of Jatrabari Police Station to register an FIR.

According to the case documents, Sanowar on 20 July was shot in the capital’s Shanir Akhra by Awami League goons and police. Gun shot hit Sanowar critically and he was immediately rushed to DMCH, where the attending doctors declared him dead.

In Narsingdi, the murder case of labourer Zaman, 17, was filed by Angur Mia, brother-in-law of the victim, with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Rakibul Haque. The court ordered the Madhabdi Police Station to register the case in connection with the killing of Zaman, son of Shahidul Islam of Deouldangra village under Nandail Police Station of Narsingdi.

The case details said Zaman was shot by Awami League goons on 21 July when he was taking part in a student-public protest in front of Meherpara Union Parishad under Madhabdi Police Station. He succumbed to his injuries at the DMCH on 25 July.

In Bogura, BNP leader Zillur Rahman’s wife Khadija filed the murder case against Hasina with Bogura Sadar Police Station on Saturday night, Inspector Faim Uddin of the station, told The Business Standard. The BNP leader was shot on 4 August during the student-led movement in Bogura’s Gabtoli.

In Pirojpur, Hasina and 32 others have been accused in a case filed over the disappearance of a BNP leader for 11 years. Babul Howlader, father of the missing person Sunny Howlader, filed the case in the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate court.

Judge Helal Uddin took cognisance of the case and directed the OC of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station to register an FIR, said Abul Kalam Akon, lawyer who filed the case.

According to the plaintiff, the incident took place on 10 January 2013, when 14-15 people wearing RAB uniform and 5-6 plainclothesmen entered Sunny’s house, blindfolded him and took him into a microbus. RAB officials denied his arrest. Sunny has been missing since.
