Chattogram police have sued over 1.15 lakh people, all unnamed, in six cases filed over attacks on six police stations in the aftermath of the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The process of filing two more cases is underway over attacks on two more police stations, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) Qazi Mohammad Tarek Aziz said today (27 August).
On 5 August, Sheikh Hasina fled the country in the face of a mass uprising, led by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, demanding her resignation.
Later that day, scores of police stations came under attacks from unidentified people. The attackers looted thousands of weapons from the stations. Several police officers were killed and many suffered injuries.
In Chattogram alone, eight police stations out of a total 16, came under attack that day, ADC Tarek Aziz said, adding that the attacks caused damages worth around Tk21 crore and destroyed important documents.
The stations are: Kotowali, Sadarghat, Pahartali, Akbar Shah, EPZ, Patenga, Double Mooring and Halishahar police stations.
Six separate cases have been filed over the attacks on six police stations accusing 1.154 lakh unnamed people, the ADC said.
Cases will also be filed with the remaining two stations – Doublemooring and Halishaha stations- over the attacks.
