What Akram Khan said about Tamim Iqbal: On the field or in the Boardroom

Tamim Iqbal’s international career is currently at a standstill.

The future path of this experienced opener, who has been out of the national team for an extended period, remains uncertain.

However, BCB President Faruque Ahmed has expressed his desire to see Tamim play for another two to three years. If that doesn’t happen, he would like to see the experienced opener take up a role on the board.

Since assuming the role of BCB President on 21 AUGUST, Faruk has addressed several questions regarding Tamim during a press conference at Mirpur Stadium. Although he refrained from making any decisions before speaking with Tamim, Faruk shared his thoughts about his beloved junior colleague.

A few days later, the same question was posed to another former captain and BCB director, Akram Khan. Akram, who is also Tamim’s uncle, made a similar comment.

Speaking to the media in front of the BCB office on Tuesday, Akram said, “He is still playing. Right now, I want him to play and play well. I can’t say much about his situation. It’s definitely his decision whether he wants to continue playing or join the board.”

Faruk had earlier said about Tamim, “If you ask me, I would like to see Tamim play for another two to three years. This is my personal opinion. But my personal opinion doesn’t hold much weight.

There are departments that handle fitness tests and the requirements for joining the team. It would be great if he can continue playing. If not, and if he joins the board, I would still be very happy. He is a former captain, which means he possesses leadership qualities.”

Tamim last played for Bangladesh in SEPTEMBER 2023. That was an ODI against New Zealand in Mirpur, and since then, he hasn’t donned the Bangladesh jersey. Although Tamim was expected to captain the team in the 2023 World Cup, he ultimately did not participate in the tournament. A few months later, in FEBRUARY, he played in the BPL, leading Fortune Barishal to the title.

The left-handed opener, who was named Player of the Tournament, later played for Prime Bank Cricket Club in the Dhaka Premier League.

Despite continuing in domestic cricket, Tamim’s name has largely faded from the national team scene. He has not been seen much on the field or in any cricketing activities.

Recently, Tamim made headlines when he visited Mirpur Stadium, showing the stadium’s infrastructure to Asif Mahmud Sojeeb Bhuiyan, the Youth and Sports Advisor. This visit sparked new discussions: Is Tamim returning to the national team, or is he joining the board?
