US can help reform Bangladesh Police: Home adviser
Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today (28 August) sought cooperation from the United States to reform the Bangladesh Police.
“The US is a significant partner in Bangladesh’s development, providing support across various sectors. So, US can play an important role in ongoing police reforms, including training and related assistance,” he made the remarks during a meeting with the US Charge d’Affairs Helen LaFave at his Secretariat.
LaFave highly praised the intelligence agencies of Bangladesh for their role in maintaining security of the American Embassy and elsewhere of the diplomatic enclave.
“But, it is a must to reform the intelligence agencies, including the police, as part of the welfare of the people,” the US Charge d’Affairs said.
During the meeting, various issues were discussed, including cooperation in Bangladesh’s security and agricultural sectors, and the rehabilitation of those affected by the recent floods.
The adviser also sought financial assistance from the US government for those affected by the ongoing floods and highlighted the need for seeds, fertilisers, and other agricultural supplies for rehabilitation efforts.
In response, Chargé d’Affaires LaFave stated that the US Department of Agriculture is already working with nine government agencies in Bangladesh and will provide full support, including the supply of necessary resources.
