Editors’ Council emphasises transparency, efficiency in government actions
The Editors’ Council has emphasised transparency and efficiency in actions taken by the interim government.
In a view exchange meeting with the leaders of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on Thursday (29 August), the council’s President Mahfuz Anam also called for clarifying the vision for a newly reformed nation, reads a press release.
“A connection should be maintained between the government and the people. The media can play a role as a bridge in this regard,” he said.
Mahfuz, also the editor of The Daily Star, stated that the media aims to be involved in the reforms and nation-building process.
Underscoring the importance of press freedom, he called for the cancellation of all false cases against journalists.
During the meeting, held at The Daily Star Centre, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Adviser Nahid Islam highlighted the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s efforts to create an inclusive society keeping Bangladesh in centre.
Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan praised the print media for its role during the hard days of July, stating that print media was a reliable source of information when television channels were unable to provide accurate news.
Mafuz Alam, coordinator of the Liaison Committee and special assistant to the Chief Adviser, described the mass uprising as a coordinated effort.
He said the fight against fascist systems has come from all levels, and the current discussion is about how to integrate everyone into a new Bangladesh.
The meeting was attended by Nasir Uddin Patowary (Nasir Abdullah), Akram Hossain, Bhuiyan Asaduzzaman, Mamun Abdullahil, and Ariful Islam Aadi from the Liaison Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement; Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah from Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and Samantha Sharmin as representative of the civic committee.
The discussion was conducted by Dewan Hanif Mahmood, General Secretary of the Editors’ Council and Editor of Bonik Barta.
