Jamaat seeks China’s support for Rohingya repatriation


The party urged China to increase its investments in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has sought China’s assistance in the repatriation of Rohingya refugees who sought refuge in Bangladesh from persecution in Myanmar.

“If China takes effective steps, it could help resolve the Rohingya crisis,” Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said when Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen met him at the party’s Moghbazar office in Dhaka today.

After the meeting, Dr Shafiqur told the media, “We have requested China to play an effective role in the rehabilitation and repatriation of the Rohingyas.”

He added that discussions included talks with several Chinese officials, including political representatives, focusing on areas of mutual interest and ways to strengthen cooperation between Bangladesh and China. 

The meeting, which lasted about an hour, addressed how to enhance relations between the two countries and advance in education, culture, and development. Also, they discussed recent political changes in Bangladesh.

The Jamaat leader expressed hope that future interactions between the people, governments, and parties of both nations would be closer, with continued dialogue benefiting both countries’ interests. 

He also urged China to increase its investments in Bangladesh.

Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen, speaking to the media after the meeting, described the exchange as very successful. He highlighted discussions on strengthening bilateral relations and increasing cooperation in development projects.

Yao Wen also said that they discussed Chinese investment and the current situation in Bangladesh, affirming China’s commitment to improving relations. 

Regarding the interim government’s timeframe, he said that it is an internal matter for Bangladesh and that China does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
