Bangladesh defender Tariq Kazi set for January return after Finnish military duty
Tariq Kazi, a Finland-born defender for the Bangladesh national football team, has shared a message of support for his teammates while undergoing compulsory military service in Finland.
The 23-year-old defender left Bangladesh following the national team’s last international fixture in June.
Since then, he has been fulfilling the military service required by Finnish law for all men aged 18 and over, which can range from six to twelve months. Tariq began his service in July, which has kept him away from both club and international football.
Speaking from Finland, Tariq extended his best wishes to the national team, saying, “I want to send my good luck to the Bangladesh team as they face Bhutan. I wish I could be there with you, but I’m currently engaged in my mandatory military service here in Finland. I hope to rejoin the national team and my club Bashundhara Kings soon. Until then, fight for the win, everyone!”
Tariq is expected to return to Bangladesh in January 2024, after completing his six-month service. Despite efforts by the BFF to delay his conscription due to his football commitments, the Finnish government declined the request.
His absence means he will miss all three FIFA windows this year. However, he is expected to be back in time for the Asian Cup Qualifiers, which begin in March 2024, and will be available for both club and national duties at that time.
Sadman Sakib, head of media for the BFF, confirmed Tariq’s expected return date and shared that the team eagerly anticipates his return to full training and competition.
