Morsalin’s strike hands Bangladesh victory in Thimphu
Bangladesh secured a hard-fought victory against Bhutan in their first international friendly at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, thanks to a decisive early goal from Sheikh Morsalin.
Arriving in Bhutan a week before the match to adjust to the altitude, the team still showed signs of discomfort.
The early stages of the game were marked by Bangladesh’s battle with the conditions rather than Bhutan’s pressure. The breakthrough came when Rakib Hossain sent in a cross that Bhutan’s goalkeeper, Sherin Dendup, fumbled, allowing Morsalin to capitalise and put his side ahead.
Despite taking the lead, Bangladesh found it difficult to create clear opportunities throughout the match. Their limited chances were a reflection of the team’s struggle to adjust to the high-altitude environment, with players like Rakib, Morsalin, and Faisal Ahmed Fahim unable to consistently challenge Bhutan’s backline.
On the other side, Bhutan managed to dominate possession, launching repeated attacks that they were unable to convert, largely due to poor finishing.
Jamal Bhuiyan, a key figure for Bangladesh, didn’t start the match but came on in the 70th minute.
As the second half wore on, substitutions including Shahriar Emon and Rabbi Hossain Rahul gave Bangladesh more control in midfield, and the team began to push forward with greater urgency. Several corners were won, and late in the match, Shahriar Emon squandered a good chance. Shortly after, a well-hit shot from Rabbi Hossain Rahul was expertly tipped away for a corner by Bhutan’s keeper.
The effects of the altitude became even more apparent as the match progressed, with Bangladesh’s players visibly tiring in the second half.
Coach Javier Cabrera had set up his side to play cautiously, knowing the conditions would take their toll. After taking an early lead, the team focused on slowing the pace of the game and conserving energy. This approach ultimately paid off as Bangladesh managed to hold on to their narrow lead and claim their first win in Thimphu.
Bangladesh will return to the same venue for their second friendly against Bhutan on 8th September, with kick-off scheduled for 6 PM.
