The body of a student who had been missing for two days was recovered from Khoiyachora waterfall in Chattogram’s Mirsarai.
Deceased Sifat Uddin Majumder, the son of Mostafizur Rahman from Dhaka’s Mirpur, was a student in the Fine Arts Department at the University of Development Alternative (UODA).
“Sifat went on a trip to Khoiyachora waterfall with 13 friends on Tuesday (3 September). He went missing around 3pm while exploring the waterfall,” Imam Hossain Patowary, station officer of Mirsarai Fire Service and Civil Defense Station, told The Business Standard today (5 September).
“Despite searching for Sifat from morning to evening yesterday, we were unable to find him. Today, a diving team from the fire service resumed the search and discovered his body floating in a well of the waterfall around 1:30 PM,” the officer added.
Mirsarai Police Station Inspector (investigation) Diptesh Roy said the body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for autopsy.
“Sifat’s body was swollen. The cause of death will be known after the autopsy. For now, preparations are being made to file an unnatural death case in this incident,” he added.
Tonmoy, who went on the trip with Sifat, told TBS that they entered the waterfall area around 11:30am on Tuesday. After wandering around for a while, they had breakfast at a place on the hill.
“At around 3pm, Sifat went missing. After searching for a few hours, we notified his family, and by 8pm that day, we reported the incident to Mirsarai Police Station,” he added.
