At least 5 people, including a hospital supervisor, were injured when a group of people attacked the doctors and staff of the Shariatpur Sadar Hospital allegedly over a patient’s file.
The incident took place at 11:30 pm today (7 September) and the authorities have since stopped all medical services of the hospital except the emergency department, Hospital Supervisor Dr Md Habibur Rahman told The Business Standard.
Shariatpur Sadar’s Palang Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mejbah Uddin Ahmed said legal action will be taken after a written complaint is received.
“Police and army have been deployed for the security of the doctors, nurses, staff and patients of the hospital,” he added.
Nasima Akhter, senior nurse of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, said, “A relative of a patient came to the nurses’ room to collect the patient’s file. I asked the person to take the file with the doctor’s permission. Then he hurled insults and tried to attack me. My colleagues saved me.”
Dulal, a janitor of the hospital, said a man named Rayhan Pahar, came back later accompanied by 20-25 people with sticks and started beating them.
Rayhan Pahar could not be reached for comment over the matter.
Dr Habibur Rahman said until the arrest of the attackers and exemplary punishment, all services of the hospital except the emergency department will remain halted.
