National Citizens’ Committee to be unveiled today
A new platform titled “National Citizens’ Committee” led by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement is set to be unveiled this afternoon (8 September).
“The platform will work as a pressure group to restructure the state and eradicate the fascist political system,” said a press release issued by the student movement last night (7 September).
As per the release, the committee will be unveiled at 4:30pm at the Central Shaheed Minar today.
“The Sheikh Hasina-led government fell through the sacrifices of hundreds of martyrs and thousands of injured and the participation of people from all walks of life under the leadership of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Now it’s time to fulfil the second step of the one-point demand of the students and the people, which is the eradication of the fascist political system,” reads the release.
“A new Bangladesh needs to be formed to realise the potential that has emerged through the recent uprising. Our main goal will be holding discussions with political and cultural actors in the society to build consensus and organise the people to prepare a new constitution through a legislative assembly,” added the release.
The release also said committees will be formed at 64 districts, thana and city levels after forming the central committee.
Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud congratulated the initiative through a Facebook post yesterday.
“May the National Citizens’ Committee become successful in protecting the spirit of national unity and mass uprising and rebuilding Bangladesh,” he wrote in his post.
