Vatican envoy meets chief adviser, discusses Rohingya humanitarian response


The Vatican envoy said they had proposed an inter-faith dialogue between the Islamic scholars of Bangladesh and a delegation from the Holy See’s Dicastery on Interreligious Dialogue.

The Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See (Ambassador of Vatican) to Bangladesh, Kevin S Randell paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka today (9 September).

The chief adviser and the apostolic nuncio of the Holy See discussed issues related to Bangladesh’s religious minorities, inter-faith dialogue, Rohingya humanitarian response and the UN General Assembly where Professor Yunus is expected to speak later this month, reads a press release.

The Vatican envoy said they had proposed an inter-faith dialogue between the Islamic scholars of Bangladesh and a delegation from the Holy See’s Dicastery on Interreligious Dialogue. 

He also underscored the need for scaling up assistance for more than one million Rohingya people who live in the camps in Bangladesh’s southeast.

The chief adviser said the main focus of the interim government is the law and order situation, stressing that the security situation has improved in the country.

Dr Yunus also said the interim government has rolled out important reforms in the first month after he took over as the chief adviser.

He sought support from the Holy See for reforms and the Rohingya people.

Lamiya Morshed, senior secretary for SDG affairs, and Kazi Russel Pervez, director general of the foreign ministry, were present during the meeting.
