Dhaka seeks Canadian support for Bangladesh’s ongoing reform

Foreign Secretary Md Jasim Uddin today (11 September) sought continued Canadian support for ongoing reforms under the Bangladesh’s interim government.

He made the call while hosting a farewell luncheon for departing Canadian High Commissioner Dr Lilly Nicholls at the State Guest House Padma in the capital, a foreign ministry’s press release said. 

Prior to the luncheon, the two diplomats discussed various aspects of the Bangladesh-Canada bilateral relationship, it added.
 
During the meeting, the foreign secretary highlighted the recent student-led uprising in Bangladesh as a revolutionary event that has created space to reform the country towards a democratic future free from discrimination. 

Dr Nicholls reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting the interim government and its reform efforts. 

She described the Bangladesh-Canada relationship as “multifaceted” and expressed optimism about further collaboration. 

The envoy also thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their support throughout her tenure.

The foreign secretary also praised Dr Nicholls for her dynamic role in strengthening ties between the two countries.
