Former Supreme Court justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik has been discharged from the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and transferred to Sylhet Central Jail, according to the hospital administration.
On 24 August, Manik was physically assaulted by allegedly pro-BNP lawyers and a group of unidentified men when he was being taken to the court.
According to eyewitnesses, Manik was indiscriminately punched and eggs and shoes were hurled at him.
After being taken to jail from the court, he fell ill in the evening and was admitted to the hospital.
“Manik is now healthy. Therefore, after a thorough examination, the medical board formed for his treatment decided to discharge him from the hospital,” Professor Shishir Ranjan Chakrabarti, president of the medical board, told The Business Standard.
“After completing all preparations, he has been handed over to the prison authorities.”
Shishir Chakrabarty mentioned that Manik had a heart problem and underwent bypass surgery 10 years ago. He also has diabetes and high blood pressure.
On 23 August, former justice Manik was detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while attempting to flee to India through the Jakiganj border area in Sylhet.
He was later handed over to Kanaighat Police Station the next day.
On the same day, a Sylhet court ordered him to be sent to jail.
