If the next national election is held without the participation of the Awami League it will not be considered unacceptable, said Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Electoral System Reform Commission formed by the interim government.

“Many [Al leaders] have fled after the former prime minister’s departure. There is no one left to take up leadership now. If the national election is held without the Awami League, it will not be considered unacceptable,” he said at a shadow parliament on ‘State Reform and the Protection of Democracy in the National Election,’ held at FDC in Dhaka today (14 September).

Badiul, secretary of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan), further said, “The Awami League has completely destroyed the electoral system of this country by holding one-sided, fake, and midnight elections.”

Mentioning that the Election Commission has repeatedly violated the constitution by politicising the election process under various pretexts, he said they [EC] ignored court orders and showed blatant bias.

“Therefore, the issue of prosecuting all individuals involved in election-related crimes should be seriously considered,” he added.
