Alamgir Sheikh, 34, from Patgram, Lalmonirhat, has been detained by Indian authorities and had his tourist visa cancelled allegedly for his anti-India posts and comments made on social media.
Ahsan Habib, in charge of immigration police at the Burimari land port, confirmed the incident this (16 September) morning.
Alamgir Sheikh, son of Nuru Sheikh from the Jumma Para area of Patgram, travelled to India on a tourist visa on 3 September.
According to immigration police sources, Alamgir posted anti-India content and made anti-India comments during a live broadcast on social media while he was in India. This activity caught the attention of Indian security officials, who identified him and subsequently detained him at the Changrabandha immigration checkpoint yesterday (15 September).
After interrogation, Indian authorities cancelled his visa and handed him over to the Burimari immigration police.
In a live video from Agra’s Taj Mahal, Alamgir said, “In 1971, India helped us a lot and also separated us from Pakistan. Now, we, the people of Bangladesh, want to divide India. Long live Manipur. I want my Bengal back. West Bengal, Tripura, Assam should be returned to Bangladesh.”
Indian authorities acted on these statements, leading to his detention and deportation, immigration police sources said.
