Veteran sports journalist Aghor Mondol passes away

Veteran sports journalist Aghor Mondol has passed away. He had been suffering from various health complications, including kidney issues and heart disease, for a long time. Although his kidney condition had somewhat stabilised through treatment, Mondol contracted dengue on 5 September. He had been receiving treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical Hospital since then, where he breathed his last today at the age of 58.

Mondol’s family confirmed the news of his passing. His body will be taken from the hospital to his workplace, ATN News, where colleagues can pay their respects. It will then be moved to the Handball Federation for further tributes, followed by the Dhaka Reporters Unity. His body will finally be taken to his residence in Hatirpool before being cremated tonight at the Postogola crematorium.

Mondol’s health deteriorated during his hospital stay, leading to his transfer from a general cabin to the ICU. Eventually, he was placed on life support, but despite doctors’ best efforts, he passed away today. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, along with numerous admirers.

Aghor Mondol had been a part of the sports journalism profession for over three decades. He began his career in the 1990s with Ajker Kagoj and later worked at Dainik Bhorer Kagoj, where he mentored many of today’s prominent sports journalists.

After leaving print media, the esteemed journalist transitioned to electronic broadcasting, working with private television channels such as Channel i, Deepto TV, and ATN News. Most recently, he served as the Editor of Digital and New Media at ATN News. Alongside his job, Mondol also contributed columns to various newspapers and online news outlets.
