Amid debate over the export decision of the country’s national fish, the first consignment of 12 metric tonnes of Hilsa was sent to India through Benapole land port today (26 September) ahead of Durga Puja.

Three trucks carrying the Hilsa fish were sent to India by three export-import organisations and reached India’s Petrapole Port.

The export of Hilsa needs to happen within 12 October, said a fisheries official at Benapole.

In response to the “special request” from India for the Durga Puja festival, the Ministry of Commerce approved the export of 2,420 metric tonnes of Hilsa through 49 export agencies.

Aswadul Islam, fisheries inspector of the Fisheries Inspection and Quality Control Office of Benapole Port, said 12 metric tonnes of Hilsa was exported after checking the quality.
