Quota protests: A day of tension begins amid nationwide shutdown
Dhaka woke up with apprehension and a day of tension began as the students’ platform for quota reform has called for a ‘complete shutdown’ across the country Thursday.
Rickshaws and CNG autos were seen plying the city streets while presence of public buses was thin like other early morning scenario.
A good number of office vehicles carrying respective officials were like regular days. However, some private officials said they started early.
Many of those travelling by rickshaws, CNG autos and public transports were seen carrying their office ID cards.
No untoward incident was reported in the first two hours after a night of rumours particularly on social media and some alleged arrests.
Police and members of other law enforcing agencies took position in different parts of the city following violent clashes for past two days leaving at least seven persons.
However, educational institutions remained closed for an indefinite period from Thursday following orders from the concerned authorities.
The freedom fighters are scheduled to hold rallies today. Front organisations of the ruling party are also scheduled to ‘keep sharp eyes’ on the streets.
