Liverpool opens Premier League campaign with 2-0 win over Ipswich

The match marked Arne Slot’s first competitive game as Liverpool’s head coach and showcased a strong second-half performance from his team at Portman Road.

The visitors were initially under pressure from Ipswich, who were making their top-flight return after 22 years. In the opening minutes, Jarell Quansah made a crucial block to deny Omari Hutchinson’s shot.

At the other end, Ryan Gravenberch’s well-placed pass found Mohamed Salah, but the Egyptian’s control let him down.

Jacob Greaves tested Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker with a header from a free-kick, while Hutchinson’s counter-attack in the 32nd minute was saved by Alisson.

Luis Diaz had a chance when a loose ball fell to him, but Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton was quick to react. Axel Tuanzebe’s header narrowly missed, and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s effort went over the bar, leaving Ipswich the happier side at half-time.

In the second half, Liverpool made a tactical change, bringing Ibrahima Konate on for Quansah. Ipswich had a penalty claim when Liam Delap was brought down by Virgil van Dijk, but the decision was overturned due to an offside in the build-up.

Liverpool’s performance improved markedly after the break. Alexander-Arnold played a key role, initiating a move that saw Diaz’s attempt go over the crossbar.

The Reds’ pressure continued, with shots from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister being blocked, and Jota heading wide from an Alexander-Arnold cross.

Jota made amends shortly after, capitalizing on Alexander-Arnold’s precise pass to score from close range. Salah then extended Liverpool’s lead with a deft finish after a deflection, following a link-up with Szoboszlai.

Liverpool controlled the final moments of the game, ensuring they started their campaign with a clean sheet and three points.
