The release said 626 individuals, including several political figures and members of law enforcers, sought refuge at cantonments on 5 August, fearing for their lives.

“In this context, to prevent extrajudicial activities, protect lives, and uphold the rule of law, 24 political figures, five judges, 19 civil administration officials, 28 police officers, 487 members of the police at various levels, officials from various public universities, and a group of 12 individuals along with 51 family members [spouses and children] totalling 626 individuals were provided shelter at various cantonment areas,” the release said.

It said 615 individuals left the military bases on their own as the situation improved.

So far, based on the complaints/cases against them, four of the sheltered individuals have been transferred to the law enforcement forces following due legal processes, the release said.

It said three sheltered individuals and four family members, totalling seven individuals, remained at the cantonment areas.

“In this regard, the army has provided all relevant information to the concerned ministry,” according to the release.

It said the Bangladesh Army is working impartially and professionally to improve the country’s law and order situation, prevent extrajudicial activities, and maintain the law’s supremacy in the emerging situation.
