Father drowns in floodwater to save his son in Ctg

Md Roji Ahmed, a 55-year-old father, was swept away by the strong currents of floodwater while bringing his son home from a madrasa at Bhujpur in Chattogram district on Thursday (22 August).

“Baba held me tightly and placed my hands on a tree. I managed to hold onto the tree, but the current swept him away,” said Naim, Roji Ahmed’s son.

“A while later, some passersby noticed and rescued me,” he added.

Naim was Roji’s eldest son.

The incident took place in the ward no-7 of East Bhujpur village under Bhujpur union in Chattogram. The father’s body has been recovered from the same location around 9pm last night (23 August).

“Roji Ahmed’s son, Naim, studies at a local madrasa. Roji was returning home with his son. While crossing a canal adjoining the Halda river, Naim held onto a tree and survived, but the water swept away his father,” said Kazi Ashab Uddin, a local resident.

“Roji’s body was found the next day in that place,” he added.

The floodwater in Chattogram’s Fatickchari upazila began to rise on Thursday night.

On that day, the embankment of the Halda river broke, worsening the flood situation as water began to enter the locality.

However, locals reported that the water level started receding last night.
