Broadcast Journalist Center (BJC), the key organisation of broadcast journalists of the country, has expressed deep concern over the arrest of journalist couple Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa.
In a statement issued today (24 August), the BJC also demanded an end to the harassment and intimidation of journalists, ensuring their safety and a conducive working environment.
The BJC called upon the chief advisor, law advisor, and information advisor to intervene and ensure that legal assistance is provided to Shakil and Rupa.
“The fall of the Awami League government has led to a new wave of attempts to suppress dissent, putting the freedom of journalism at risk. Media houses have been attacked and set on fire, and many journalists have lost their jobs due to the occupation of media outlets,” reads the statement.
This atmosphere of fear has challenged the current government’s commitment to media freedom, it said.
“The broadcast media in Bangladesh has faced numerous challenges under previous regimes, including repressive laws, authoritarian behaviour, and questionable ownership patterns. The recent student uprising raised hopes for a more independent journalism landscape, but recent events have reignited concerns about these issues,” said the BJC statement.
Mentioning that Shakil and Rupa have been remanded in connection with a murder case, it said despite not being named in the initial case statement, their names were later included among numerous “unknown accused.”
“While they can be prosecuted if found guilty of any wrongdoing, the manner in which they were targeted raises concerns about the continued use of anti-human rights tactics to silence dissent,” said BJC.
The organisation also called for a speedy trial in the case of the murdered journalist couple Sagar, Runi.
