Akhaura land port resumes operations after five days
After a five-day closure due to flooding, the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria has resumed operations.
Starting from this morning (26 August), limited exports to India have resumed, with around 3 tons of frozen fish being exported. Additionally, passenger movement through the Akhaura international immigration checkpost also resumed at 12:15pm.
According to sources, over 40 villages in Akhaura upazila were flooded on 21 August due to heavy rainfall and water from upstream in India.
The floodwaters also submerged the Akhaura land port, halting import-export activities and passenger movement. This disruption resulted in daily losses of approximately Tk2 crore in exports for traders and around Tk400,000 in government revenue from passenger taxes.
“Limited export activities have resumed from Monday morning. Since the broken Bailey bridge on the Akhaura-Agartala international road has not been repaired, small fish-laden trucks are currently entering the port via an alternative route through Gazi Bazar and Kalikapur. However, full-scale import-export operations cannot be resumed due to the inability of heavy trucks to access the port,” said Hasibul Hasan, president of the Akhaura land port C&F agents association.
Md Khairul Alam, officer-in-charge of the Akhaura international immigration checkpost police, mentioned, “Although the floodwaters receded, technical issues prevented the resumption of passenger movement. After a technical team from Dhaka fixed the problem, passenger services resumed from Monday noon.
