Murder cases against Hasina hit century


The first murder case against her and senior leaders of the Awami League was filed in the capital on 13 August

In 24 days since she fled the country in the face of a mass uprising, a total of 100 murder cases have been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina across the country so far.

Hasina fled to India on 5 August noon. The first murder case against her and senior leaders of the Awami League was filed in the capital eight days later on 13 August.

The latest case was filed today (August 29) with the International Crimes Tribunal’s (ICT), accusing the former premier and 56 others, including 32 senior journos over alleged crimes against humanity and genocide during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement across the country.

The complaint has been filed by Md Golam Razzaque, father of Nasib Hasan Riyan, 17, who was shot dead on 5 August evening in Shyamoli’s Ring Road area.

Another murder case has been filed against Hasina and 35 others today over the killing of journalist Hasan Mahmud, also president of the Dhaka South unit of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation.

Hasan Mahmud’s wife, Fatema, filed the complaint with Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque’s court in Dhaka.

The court accepted the complaint and directed the Khilgaon police to register it as a case.

This marks the hundredth murder case against Hasina.

These cases have been filed on behalf of the families of those killed in the police and ruling party’s attacks during the protests between 16 July and 5 August.

Among these, eight cases have been filed with the ICT for genocide, and 92 murder cases have been lodged at various police stations across the country. Additionally, there is one case involving allegations of enforced disappearance and abduction.
