Shanto reveals team’s desire for Shakib and Mushfiq to finish the match
In a remarkable turn of events, Bangladesh secured a historic 6-wicket victory against Pakistan in the Rawalpindi Test, sealing a 2-0 series win.
The match, which concluded on the fifth day, saw Bangladesh clinch the win in the second session, largely thanks to the seasoned duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim. Shakib’s decisive boundary ultimately ensured the victory, highlighting the pivotal role of these two stalwarts.
Many times, Shakib and Mushfiq have led the team to numerous victories with their remarkable performances, both with the bat and ball. Their presence in almost every significant win for Bangladesh is a testament to their enduring influence and capability. Their contribution in the Rawalpindi Test was no different, as their partnership provided the solid foundation needed to chase down 185 runs after the loss of Mominul Haque’s wicket.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, reflecting on the victory, expressed his desire for the match to be concluded by Shakib and Mushfiqur.
He emphasised their longstanding impact on the game and the significance of witnessing such experienced players finish the match. “We were all hoping that Mushfiq and Shakib would see us through,” Shanto remarked. “They have been instrumental in so many wins over the years. In the wake of political upheaval in Bangladesh, with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigning on 5 August and fleeing to India, the interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus has been established. Yunus has reached out to Shanto, extending his congratulations and expressing a desire to meet the team upon their return.
Winning a Test match on foreign soil is a challenging feat, and securing a series victory makes it even more remarkable. Bangladesh’s success in this series is notable, considering their previous overseas series wins against the West Indies in 2009 and Zimbabwe in 2021. Shakib and Mushfiqur, both over 35, have played crucial roles in these victories, proving their value to the team despite nearing the end of their international careers.
