Md Sonu, 30, a rickshaw puller, was shot dead in the capital’s Mohammadpur Geneva Camp this morning (4 September).
“Sonu was shot dead this morning by ‘the opponent’ over illicit dealings and a struggle for dominance. There has been tension in the Geneva Camp area for several days over this issue,” said Iftekhar Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohammadpur police station.
Mohammad Faruk, DMCH police outpost in-charge, said, “Sonu was brought to the hospital at around 7:50am. The duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.
“The body was sent to the morgue for an autopsy,” he added.
Sonu’s neighbour Sajid, who brought him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), told Bangla daily Prothom Alo that Sonu confronted Sohel Buniya, 30, an alleged drug dealer in Geneva Camp, this morning.
“When Sonu confronted Sohel, saying ‘you are selling drugs, and it’s corrupting our boys here,’ it led to an argument between the two,” he said.
“At one point, Sohel and a few others attacked Sonu. Sohel shot Sonu in the chest, resulting in his death,” Sajid added.
