Motijheel Police Station has requested the superintendent of police of immigration to detain Md Zafar Alam, former managing director of Social Islami Bank Limited (SIBL), if he attempts to leave the country.
Zafar Alam is an accused in a case currently under investigation by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, according to a letter sent by the Motijheel Police Station.
“Zafar Alam may attempt to leave the country at any time for an extended period. Therefore, it is crucial to provide the necessary assistance to ensure his arrest,” reads the letter.
Elias Hossain, sub-inspector of Motijheel Police Station, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
According to police sources, a case was filed against former SIBL chairman Belal Ahmed and managing director Zafar Alam on Tuesday (4 September) for allegedly attacking a bank employee.
Fahima Akter Majumder, the wife of the victim Masud Mia, filed the case at Motijheel Police Station.
On 25 August, the Bangladesh Bank dissolved SIBL’s board, which was reportedly under the control of the Chattogram-based S Alam Group. The central bank also formed a new five-member board.
S Alam Group is alleged to have engaged in irregularities and corrupt practices within SIBL, particularly in the areas of recruitment and loan disbursement.
Following the allegations, the Bangladesh Bank dissolved the board of directors.
