A police constable from the Gazipur Industrial Police has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing Hridoy, 20, a college student, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement near Konabari Police Station in the city on 5 August.

“On a tip-off, police conducted a raid and arrested the constable Akram Hossain, 22, from the Parail area of Kishoreganj on Friday night [6 September],” Subir Kumar Saha, assistant commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (Konabari Zone), told The Business Standard.

“The court sent him to jail today [7 September]. Others involved in the incident will also be arrested,” the officer added.

According to Konabari police sources, during the protests, Hridoy and others were chanting slogans against the Hasina-led government on the Kashimpur-Konabari road of Gazipur on 5 August.

At the time, constable Akram allegedly picked up Hridoy from the roadside and shot him from behind, resulting in Hridoy’s death on the spot.

Later, Md Ibrahim, the victim’s cousin, filed a murder case with Konabari Police Station.

Hriday, son of Lal Mia from Alamgir village in Tangail’s Gopalpur upazila, was a 11th grade student at Hemnagar Degree College and also drove auto-rickshaw in the Konabari area.
