Suspended CCC accountant Masudul faces departmental case for taking bribes

The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has initiated a departmental case against its accountant Masudul Islam, who was suspended for allegedly accepting bribes from contractors.

The decision follows an investigation that found evidence supporting the bribery allegations.

A departmental case against public servants refers to actions taken by their respective department for violating rules. It does not involve filing a lawsuit against the accused in court.

Sheikh Muhammad Touhidul Islam, CEO of the city corporation, said Masudul Islam has been charged with a serious offence under the Chittagong City Corporation Employees Employment Rules.

He has been given ten working days to explain why he should not face disciplinary action, said the official.

On 26 August, Masudul Islam was suspended after a video showing him allegedly accepting bribes from contractors went viral on social media.

The 30-second video shows Masudul Islam accepting Tk500 from a contractor while handing over a bill check. Later, another contractor came and also handed him money.

A three-member committee was formed to investigate the matter. The city corporation filed the departmental case against Masudul today as per the probe report filed by the committee.

According to CCC officials, it is common practice for contractors to pay bribes to obtain bill checks. The amount of the bribe often depends on the value of the bill.
