Local residents have organised a human chain demanding the renaming of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Zia International Airport.
The human chain was formed this (9 September) morning in the airport area.
The protesters stated that the Awami League government changed the airport’s name to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport without any valid reason.
Speakers also noted, ”Despite the fall of the Awami League government through a student-led uprising, many of their unjust actions remain. Therefore, the local residents demand from the government’s chief advisor that the airport’s name be changed back to its previous name immediately.”
Additionally, the speakers expressed their condolences for the victims of the student-led uprising and their families.
Earlier, on February 15, 2010, the previous government’s cabinet approved the decision to rename Zia International Airport to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
