A 55-year-old man was hacked to death allegedly by his son early Thursday in Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur.
The victim, Akhtar Hossain, a resident of Toragarh Sarker Bari in Ward No-8 of the municipality, was allegedly attacked by his son, Sakib, following a family dispute.
Muhammad Abdur Rashid, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hajiganj Police Station, confirmed the matter.
According to neighbours, the altercation began when Akhtar scolded his daughter-in-law around midnight. In a fit of rage, Sakib is said to have stabbed his father twice with a sharp weapon. Family members immediately rushed Akhtar to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors referred him to Cumilla. He died on the way.
Family members initially attempted to claim that Akhtar died in a road accident and began secretly preparing for his burial early in the morning. However, locals, suspicious of the circumstances, informed the police before the burial could take place.
Police arrived at the scene and took custody of the body, which was later sent to Chandpur Government General Hospital for an autopsy, said the OC.
The OC added that the murder appears to have been the result of a family dispute, and legal action will be taken following the investigation.
