A shoe trader was killed in a clash between members of the Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat and Imam-Ulama Parishad in Kuliarchar upazila of Kishoreganj today (16 September).
At least fifteen others were injured in the incident that took place in the Choysuti Bazar area of the upazila.
Sarwar Jahan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kuliarchar Police Station, said both sides claimed that the deceased, Mir Milon, 55, was one of their supporters.
Kuliarchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Fabiha Fatematuz Zohra told The Business Standard that in the morning, both sides wanted to hold processions on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad-un-nabi at the same time. So, the upazila administration discussed the issue with them and allocated time for each procession.
Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat had to hold its procession from 9am to 1pm, while Imam-Ulama Parishad were scheduled to hold their programme after 1pm.
“During Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat’s procession, a group of people attacked a mosque in the Choysuti Bazar area. People from both sides clashed. Later, the police and army reached the spot and brought the situation under control,” Fatematuz Zohra added.
OC Sarwar said the family of the victim were preparing to file a murder case.
“Police will investigate the incident and arrest those involved,” he added.
