Miraz ready to step up as Shakib’s successor, says Hathurusingha

Chandika Hathurusingha, Bangladesh’s head coach, has highlighted Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the key player ready to take over from veteran Shakib Al Hasan in the upcoming Test series against India.

He also believes his team’s recent Test series win over Pakistan will give them the confidence they need as they prepare to face India. Hathurusingha views the growing expectations as a privilege, and feels this Bangladesh squad is one of the most balanced teams the country has produced.

Speaking ahead of the series on Monday, Hathurusingha expressed his optimism. “It certainly gives us a lot of confidence coming into this series,” he said. “Not just because of the result, but the way we played that series, handling difficult situations. We were behind in both Tests but came back, with different players stepping up at key moments. This series fills us with belief.”

The coach praised the team’s depth, highlighting Bangladesh’s strong batting and bowling options. “I think this is probably the most rounded team Bangladesh has ever produced,” Hathurusingha said. “We’ve got good fast bowlers and a really experienced spin attack. Our batting depth is also impressive, with two of our spinners having Test hundreds, and our wicketkeepers being key batters. It gives us confidence that we can be competitive.”

Hathurusingha added that the pressure of expectation only strengthens the team. “Pressure is a privilege,” he remarked. “It gives us belief and something to look forward to. We understand our strengths and limitations, but playing against India, one of the best teams in the world, is a challenge we welcome. It gives you a true sense of where you stand as a team.”

One area where Hathurusingha sees significant growth is in Bangladesh’s pace bowling. The coach praised young pacer Nahid Rana, who has impressed with his raw pace. “The difference with Nahid is the fear factor he brings,” said Hathurusingha. “When you have someone who can bowl at 150kph, it challenges the opposition’s reaction time and decision-making. His ability to bowl at 145-plus for longer periods is special, but we must manage him carefully since he’s still early in his career.”

Hathurusingha credited the Bangladesh Cricket Board for investing in fast-bowling development, noting the improvements in domestic cricket that have helped nurture pace talent. “We’ve got depth now, with several fast bowlers at home, and one of our best is still recovering from injury,” he said.

Despite his involvement in T20 leagues around the world, veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan remains a key player for Bangladesh in Test cricket. Hathurusingha is confident that Shakib, who recently played for Surrey in the County Championship to regain form, will continue to have a significant impact. “He’s in good shape, and that brings a lot to the team, beyond his skillset,” the coach said. “Shakib’s all-round ability gives us the flexibility to balance the team, whether we need an extra bowler or batter. His experience is invaluable.”

Hathurusingha also praised Mehidy Hasan, who has emerged as one of the most improved players in recent years and is viewed as Shakib’s natural successor. “Miraz is probably the most improved cricketer in Bangladesh over the last five-six years,” he said. “His batting has developed significantly, and his bowling has always been his strength. He’s ready to take over when Shakib eventually retires.”

As Bangladesh prepares for the India series, Hathurusingha is aware of the challenges posed by the packed cricketing calendar. Liverpool’s Alisson Becker recently commented on the added strain of playing more matches without consideration for players’ well-being, a sentiment that resonates in cricket. Hathurusingha understands the difficulties of managing player workloads, but remains focused on ensuring his squad is ready for the immediate challenge of facing India.

This series will serve as a major test for Bangladesh, but with a well-balanced squad and recent success behind them, Hathurusingha is confident his team is ready to compete at the highest level.
