Woman arrested for pouring hot water on girl over social media taunt

A 60-year-old woman was arrested in Chittagong’s Anwara upazila for allegedly pouring hot water on a 12-year-old girl as retaliation for a social media taunt “murubbi murubbi, uhu uhu”.
The woman, identified as Saira Khatun, was arrested from Battali village last (22 September) night.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (18 September) when a group of children, including the victim, were playing outside her grandfather’s house in Zuidandi Union.
According to locals, the children teased an elderly man, Air Mohammad (65), by saying “murubbi murubbi, uhu uhu”.
Enraged by the teasing of her brother-in-law, Saira Khatun Saira Khatun poured a bucket of hot water over the 12-year-old girl, inflicting severe burns. The victim was initially taken to Anwara Upazila Health Complex but was later transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Saira Khatun went on hiding after the incident.
Monir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Anwara Police Station, said the woman was arrested after the victim’s grandfather filed a complaint at the police station.
The victim, an orphan living with her grandfather since the loss of her parents, is currently receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
