Six arrested over army officer Tanjim murder

Members of the Bangladesh Army have arrested six people from Cox’s Bazar Chakaria upazila in connection with their involvement in the killing of Lt Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon.

The arrestees have been identified as Babul Prokash, 44, Helal Uddin, 34, Anowar Hakim, 28, Arif Ullah, 25, Ziabul Karim, 45, and Md Hossain, 39, reads an ISPR press statement issued today (25 September).

Preliminary investigation revealed that four of the arrested individuals were directly involved in the killing, while the other two assisted by providing information, states ISPR.

Of the arrestees, Babul Prokash is the key financier in the killing, it said.

Babul also confessed to stabbing the army officer which resulted in his death.

Two local firearms, 11 rounds of ammunition, a knife used for the killing, a pick-up van, and a motorbike were recovered from the possessions of the arrestees.

The arrestees have been handed over to Chakaria Police Station and the process to file a case in this connection was underway.

Tanjim Sarwar was shot and stabbed to death during a raid to recover illegal firearms in Chakaria in the early hours on Tuesday (24 September).  

Tanjim was leading the raid during the incident that occurred around 3:30am in Maizpara village, Dulahazara union, according to Chakaria police and army.

During the operation, a group of 7-8 armed robbers tried to flee after spotting the army patrol team. When Tanjim chased some of the robbers, they attacked the army lieutenant, stabbing him in the neck, resulting in severe injuries and heavy bleeding, reads a statement issued by the Bangladesh Army on Tuesday.
