About 54 tonnes of hilsa have been exported to India at $10 per kilogram, which is approximately Tk1,200, ahead of Durga Puja.
“Ten exporters exported hilsa in a consignment today [26 September] through the Benapole land port,” Mahbubur Rahman, fisheries quarantine officer at Benapole Fisheries Office told The Business Standard.
Safayet Hossain, joint commissioner of Benapole Customs, said the export agencies are Map International, JS Enterprise, Sajjad Enterprise, Swarnaly Enterprise, Rupali Enterprise, JBS Food Products, Noman Enterprise, Ahnaf Traders, Pacific Sea Foods, and Suman Traders.
Bangladesh Logistics is the C&F agent responsible for clearing the hilsa from the port, the officer added.
Sajib Nazir, deputy director of Benapole port, said, “We will cooperate to ensure that cargo trucks carrying hilsa can enter India quickly after completing the paperwork.”
On 24 September, in response to a “special request” from India, the Ministry of Commerce approved the export of 2,420 tonnes of hilsa to India through 49 export agencies.
The ministry stated that the exports must be completed by 13 October.
According to port officials, the export of hilsa was stopped in 2012. Later, the export resumed. However, exports are only allowed during Durga Puja.
Last year, 3,900 tonnes of hilsa was exported. This year, it has been reduced to 2,420 tonnes.
