7.5 tonnes of hilsa exported to India at Tk1,200 per kilogram through Akhaura port

About 7.5 tonnes of hilsa have been exported to India through the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria, ahead of Durga Puja.

According to port officials, around 7pm today (26 September), two companies exported the hilsa to India’s Agartala in the first consignment. The export price of each kilogram of hilsa is $10, which is approximately Tk1,200.

Faruk Ahmed, a representative of the exporting company Swarnaly Enterprise, told The Business Standard, they purchased hilsa from the wholesale market at a price lower than the export price.

“Gradually, more hilsa will be exported to India through the port,” he added.

Md Wahiduzzaman, revenue officer of Akhaura Land Customs Station, said, “As there is no duty on exports, the customs authorities will not earn revenue, but the government will earn foreign exchange which will increase reserves.”

On 24 September, in response to a “special request” from India, the Ministry of Commerce approved the export of 2,420 tonnes of hilsa to India through 49 export agencies.

Port officials said as per the Ministry of Commerce’s decision, four companies will export 200 tonnes of hilsa through Akhaura land port until 12 October.
